Steps to save piece of Falmouth history
A piece of Falmouth's history is one step closer to being saved from destruction after councillors unanimously opposed plans to knock it down and replace it with apartments.
Harrogate House in Queen Mary Road is the subject of a planning application from Miss ACR Line and Cornish Home, who want to demolish the existing house and replace it with 11 apartments.
The house, which is in a conservation area, was designed by Truro-based architect Alfred Cornelius in the 1900s and has become one of Falmouth's best-loved buildings.
At Monday's meeting of Falmouth town council planning committee, town resident David Yelland spoke on behalf of the Gyllyngvase and Swanpool Residents Association in protest at the plans.
Mr Yelland said: "Harrogate House is an attractive residence and has architectural and historical importance in Falmouth. The proposed development would totally change the character of the Gyllyngvase Beach area."
He added that feelings from residents in the town were running "very high."
More than 20 letters of protest have been received by planning committee chairman councillor Stephen Eva, from residents angry at the proposals.
Councillor Diana Merrett said: "This will effect everyone in the area. It's not going to make the area look good. If we say yes to this we will open the floodgates to developers."
Mayor Mike Varney said he did not agree with Carrick district council, who he claimed believed the building was not of significance.
"I believe this building is very, very significant to the conservation area it sits in and we should not be touching it. There's not justification in demolishing this to put up flats," he added.
Members agreed to recommend the application be refused, on the grounds that the new design was out of context and not in-keeping with the area, was an over-development of the site, effected the street scene and was against policy in a conservation area.

MANY MANY CONGRATULATIONS TO THOSE WHO HAVE LET COMMON SENSE PREVAIL. IT IS ABOUT TIME THAT DEVELOPERS WERE GIVEN A REALITY CHECK AND NOT BE ALLOWED TO RUN ROUGHSHOD OVER THE RESIDENTS. IT WAS A PITY HOWEVER THAT THE LINE FAMILY, THAT IS TO SAY THE DECENDENTS OF THE LATE MR A.S.lINE PREVIOUS OWNER OF THE PALM BEACH HOTEL WERE UNABLE TO STOP THE DESTRUCTION OF THIS PROPERTY MY FATHER HAD A GREAT RESPECT FOR THIS AREA AND WOULD BE HORRIFIED AT ITS POTENTIAL DESTRUCTIONBY MONEY HUNGRY DEVELOPERS NOTE MS A.R.C LINE IS NO RELATION TO THIS FAMILY. INTERESTING THAT NO BRICKS HAVE YET BEEN LAID ON THE PALM BEACH SITE I HAVE TO WONDER WHY. GREAT WORK COUNCIL AND RESIDENTS.

Well Done Mike Varney and councillors for your steely determination not to allow yet another appartment block to be built in the pretty corner of Gyllingase. It is to be hoped that Harrogate House will not be the subject of a mystery fire in order to have it demolished like the Palm Beach.

Time all this construction of cheap, ugly, thoughtlessly designed, modern building for profit was halted.
A lot of these hideous monstrosities put up in recent times should be demolished and the orginal buildings put back as they were.
Looking at the mess modern architects, planners, and civil engineers are making of this country perhaps the best way forward would be to leave things alone & start going back a hundred years or more to when builders built structures that were far superior, practical & more pleasing to the eye than all these modern eyesores.

Sickening this ugly, grandiose, impractical housing for the idle rich...but then again that's probably what people were thinking, if not saying, when it was built in the 1900s. From one lot to another eh?
Cornish Homes, what a disgrace.
