Air Day tickets now on sale
Fun and games at last year's Air Day.
Fun and games at last year's Air Day.

Tickets are now on sale for this year's RNAS Culdrose Air Day, which this year will offer visitors the full air base experience.

This year's event, which has become a firm favourite on the Cornish event calendar, is being held on Wednesday, July 30.

It enables the general public to experience the sights, sounds and smells of one of Europe's largest helicopter bases.

The organisers of this year's event have said they are currently working hard to make it a day to remember.

As fast jets, helicopters and military aircraft zoom across the skies, visitors will be able to meet aircrew who have served on in frontline squadrons all over the world, pilots who have just earned their Wings' and members of the Search and Rescue Squadron, who are seen flying all over Cornwall on rescue missions, often putting their own lives at risk to save those of others.

As well as an action-packed flying display, there will also be lots of things to see, touch and try on the ground.

Visitors can climb onboard aircraft, be scrambled on a search and rescue mission, take a ride in a helicopter, be winched high into the air or jump into the driving seat of a military fire engine.

For those who prefer to watch, there will be a full arena programme with field gun competitions and displays of motorbikes, parachutists and military dogs.

All of the Naval Air Squadrons and units will be out on display ready to talk about what they do and helping the public to try out specially devised activities and challenges.

Public relations officer Emma Relton said: "This year the emphasis has been placed on enabling the public to experience the world of Culdrose.

"We have introduced Operation Air Day', so that children can embark on their own military mission. Visitors will also be able to have a go at a variety of activities around the air station including tackling obstacle courses in survival equipment, taking to the controls of helicopter simulators, feeling the kinetic power from the hose of a military fire engine and have a go at marching.

"However, Air Day is not just aimed at the children, there is plenty to do for all ages - it's well worth taking a day off work for!"

Advance tickets are available at a reduced price (£12 for adults, £4 for children aged five to 15 years and £30 for families) online at www.ticketzone.co.uk, by phone on 08705 321321 or from various tourist information centres across Cornwall.

In the Helston area, tickets are also available from Flambards, the Cancer Funding for Cornwall shop in Coinagehall Street, Gweek Seal Sanctuary, Culdrose Public Viewing Enclosure and the Culdrose Community Centre.

Tickets are also available on the day. To help reduce local traffic, organisers have introduced a special priced ticket for pedestrians and cyclists, costing £10 for adults, £4 for children and £20 for families.
