Blue’s stay in second spot after emphatic win

ST AGNES 2

HELSTON 7

HELSTON finished their Jolly's Combination League season on a high after they defeated St Agnes 7-2 at Enys Parc.

The Blues had by far the better of the game, but were unable to take their chances until in a seven-minute purple patch just before the end they snapped up a remarkable five goals.

The home side were on the back foot from the opening minute and were fortunate to survive a chance in the fifth minute when a good cross just eluded Liam Eddy.

Terry Rowe, playing as a stand-in goalkeeper, was largely untroubled as Helston dominated with Eddy putting a 13th minute chance wide of the post following a flick on by Dominic Pullen.

Two minutes later Pullen should have done much better when he hit his shot over the bar when well placed from Andy Miles' pass.

The Blues were running St Agnes ragged with Kayne Trevaskis hitting a volley just past the post and Bryan Hawke making a good run but hitting his shot into the sidenetting.

It was only a matter of time before a goal would come and in the 24th minute Pullen turned on a cross from Bryan Hawke to beat the goalkeeper for his 54th goal of the season.

St Agnes had a couple of half chances, but the Blues extended their lead in the 36th minute when Eddy nicked the ball away from a defender who looked favourite to win it and crossed for Pullen to score his second goal.

Helston were looking increasingly dangerous and just before half time Eddy had a goal-bound effort cleared off the line.

The home side had a goal disallowed for a clear offside at the start of the second half, but in the 50th minute they reduced the arrears when Rowe attempted to play a pass back out to the flank. Unfortunately his telegraphed square pass was intercepted as St Agnes snapped up their gift goal.

Mike Hallibone and Mark Golds-worthy were brought into the fray by the Blues, but again the visitors were wasteful when Pullen blasted his shot over the bar from close range after Steve Hawke had set him up.

The miss could have proved crucial when shortly after St Agnes equalised when a free kick saw Russell outjumped and the ball looping into the net.

With ten minutes to go Helston produced the most devastating spell of football for the season when they scored five goals in eight minutes.

The first came in the 80th minute when a good cross delivered with pace by Steve Hawke hit Trevaskis and spooned up into the net. A minute later Goldsworthy laid off Justin Miles' pass into the path of Trevaskis who gave the goalkeeper no chance with a great finish from the edge of the box.

Two minutes later it was 5-2 to Helston when Goldsworthy ran on to Justin Miles' pass and scampered clear before sidefooting the ball past the keeper.

Five minutes from time Trevaskis did the spadework before finding Pullen who laid the ball into the path of Goldsworthy who took his chance well to score.

A minute later the Blues scored their final goal of the season when Pullen picked up a Andy Miles' pass and set up Steve Hawke to lash in his shot.

It was a great end to the season, but the Blues' hopes of finishing as runners-up lay in the hands of Falmouth Town who last night had to beat their rivals Prenatal by six goals. Somehow, I don't believe even the most optimistic of Blues' fans would have expected that to happen.
