Cockspur Cup defeat for Truro
Truro's Jolly's Drinks ECB Cornwall Premier League game at St Just was called off on Saturday morning due to the weather, writes Michael Weeks.
However they were able to play their Cockspur Cup game in Devon against Cornwood on Sunday, but narrowly bowed out of the competition losing by eight runs. The home team were restricted to 169 for 9 in their 45 overs after getting off to a good start through Duncan Boase with 37 and Chris Beaumont's 47.
All six Truro bowlers took a wicket with the pick being Tom Sharp who returned figures of two for 10 off 9 overs. Sharp then looked to be steering Truro to victory at 161 for 6.
However following Chris Phillips's departure Sharp went for 72 and the last two wickets also fell on the same score, with two overs to spare. Former St Just player Jason Hall did the damage at the end with four for 17.
Cornwood 169-9 (C Beaumont 47, D Boase 37, M Butterworth 28no, J Hall 21; T Sharp 2-10, A Tunnadine 2-24, A Taylor 2-48), Truro 161 (T Sharp 72, G Griffiths 21; J Hall 4-17, A Bees 4-33).Cornwood beat Truro by 8 runs.
This weekend Truro have two home games against Falmouth on Saturday and Grampound Road on Monday.
Grampound Road staged the only Premier League game to get underway on Saturday. A 40 over game began at 3pm but rain at tea ended hopes of a result. The "Road" did however pick up 11 points after bowling St Austell out for 125. Chris Hunkin took three for 15 and Tom Turner three for 25. New Zealander Brayden Hill made 38 on his St Austell debut recovering the innings from 47-4. The "Road" are at Newquay on Saturday before Monday's visit to Boscawen Park.
Grampound Road's seconds County Division One visit to Luckett was one of the earlier cancellations on Saturday. They have home games with Callington and Launceston this weekend.
Truro seconds were able to play their home game with Fowey and probably wished they hadn't going down to their first defeat of the season by 81 runs. After conceding 200 they could only manage 119-9 in their 48 overs.
Fowey 200-8 (T Crapp 51no, J Snell 34, L Watts 26, R Bennetts 24; A Grant 3-26, A Fairman 2-75), Truro 119-9 (A Heayn 21, P Sharland 19; D Sanchez 4-32, J Brain 2-16). Fowey (19 points) beat Truro (six) by 81 runs.
Truro thirds home game with St Levan was called off due to a wet ground but the fourths were able to play at Falmouth and enjoyed a win by 54 runs with Alan Moore and Tony Jasper both making 30.
Truro 141 (A Moore 30, T Jasper 30, D Laporta 27; R Pennock 3-36), Falmouth 87 (T Jasper 4-41, K Wills 2-20). Truro (18 points) beat Falmouth (six) by 54 runs.
The Vinter Cup second round draw sees Truro seconds at Falmouth next Tuesday while the firsts are at Leedstown on Wednesday.
