Future challenges highlighted by re-elected chairman
The challenges posed by a new unitary authority for Cornwall were highlighted by the chairman of Porthleven town council as he began his fourth term of office last week.
Mark Berryman was unanimously re-elected as chairman at the council's annual meeting on Thursday. Council member and local vicar the Rev Harry Pugh was unanimously chosen as vice-chairman.
Mr Berryman said it had been a "privilege and an honour" to serve as chairman and he was looking forward to working with his deputy over the coming year.
Looking ahead to the creation of the unitary authority, Mr Berryman said: "We all need to work to make it a success. Everyone needs to put aside political point scoring and remember they need to do what is best for Cornwall.
"At this stage we do not know how the Porthleven seat will look. I am hopeful we will be a 'stand alone' seat, but I am concerned that the pace and framework of change are not being driven by the needs of Cornwall but by the diktats of central government.
"We still have to see how the local area networks are to work and their importance can not be underestimated.
"There is a lot of talk of developing services downwards. Be assured we will not take on any new services unless we are given the resources and support to enable us to give the people of Porthleven something better than they are getting at the moment."
Mr Berryman also alluded to previous concerns over "inappropriate" development in the port's conservation area and new regulations that could help protect the centre of the town.
He said: "This year has finally seen some movement on Article 4 for the conservation area, and not before time.
"Yes some horses have bolted and the people of Porthleven have to live with that every day, but I'm hopeful that we may finally be able to shut the stable door, and we will finally be able to give the heart of the town the support and protection it needs and deserves."
In his speech, the chairman put on record his thanks to new town clerk Corrie Thompson, who, he said, had "proved her worth time and time again", and to town warden Rod Barnes for his continuing "splendid" work.
He also thanked district and county councillors for their work on behalf of Porthleven and paid tribute to fellow town councillors for all their support.
"It's very easy to sit in a pub moaning or write anonymous letters to the press but when elections come around or there is a chance to be co-opted onto the council those people are no where to be found," said Mr Berryman.
"Councillors step up to the plate and get the job done and I thank you all."
