Pretty football but no goals
RNAS CULDROSE 1 ST DAY 3
JUST when it looked as if RNAS Culdrose had found some consistent form in the Jolly's Combination League they confounded their critics by suffering another defeat that could have been avoided.
They are still playing good football up until they reach the penalty area, but if there is no end product then defeat will inevitably follow . . . and it did.
Coach Chris Fairey, standing in as manager as well as stop-gap goalkeeper, said he had to draft in several players from the 2nd XI because of the weekend leave over the Bank Holiday.
"It gave some of the younger players an experience at playing senior football and I am sure they would have learned from that.
"What we lacked in experience we made up for in endeavour, but overall it was a bit like a lot of end-of-season games, very scrappy and not too much good football.
"What we have really suffered with is not being able to put the ball into the net when we get a purple patch. When the opposition has a purple patch they inevitably score, but we don't appear to be able to do that.
"Overall I am very disappointed that we didn't get at least a point because we had enough of the game to do so."
Culdrose played some good approach football, but despite setting up a number of good opportunities did not fare too well in front of goal. In fact, a high ratio of their chances failed to even hit the target when well placed.
Their pressure finally paid off on the half hour when they took the lead with a length of the pitch move. Iestyn Head collected a throw from Fairey and fed the ball through to Aaron Collick who sent Chris Reed racing through the Saints' defence to go round goalkeeper Paul Hoskins and score.
With five minutes remaining before half-time, the talk at the break should have been a positive one. However, St Day struck with two goals with the first coming from the penalty spot by Hoskin and the second coming from Adam Marsh when he got the better of Adam McDougal and Ivan Sadds to chip the ball over Fairey into the top corner of the net.
The second half saw Culdrose up the tempo and take the game to their visitors, but despite creating a number of chances they were still not able to test Hoskins.
With 20 minutes remaining St Day snapped up a third goal when Marsh pounced on Lee Gribble's corner to flick the ball into the top corner of the goal and give Fairey no chance.
"It was disappointing to lose," said Fairey. "I would have been happy to take a draw, but we came way with nothing which wasn't good enough."
Culdrose play their final league match on Saturday when they entertain Illogan at the airbase.
